Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN 1919. He served in the Royal Naval College of Canada (Tenth Term) 1919. With no vacancies in the RCN after graduation from the RNCC, he entered the Merchant Service and obtained a Master Mariner's Certificate. (Transferred to RCNR 1928), (Transferred to RCN) 1928. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 03/01/1928). He served in H.M.S. President 1928. He served in HMCS Vancouver. He served in HMCS Skeena 1931. He served in HMCS Champlain. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RCN (With seniority dated 03/01/1936). He served in HMCS St. Laurent as First Lieutenant 1937. He served in the RCN Barracks Halifax 1939. Anecdotes
With no vacancies in the RCN after graduation from the Royal Naval College of Canada, he resigned from the navy and entered the Merchant Service and eventually obtained a Master Mariner's Certificate. In 1927 he was the Master of a small coastal freighter, the A.G. Lillie, for Victoria Petroleum, who had a number of stations in Victoria, the Gulf Islands, and up the British Columbia coast. In November 1927 the A.G. Lillie burned in Sturdies Bay BC (Galiano Island). He was the Master of the the Attaboy. Before his World War Two service he worked in the merchant service for CN Ships.
