He qualified as a medical doctor, graduating with an MD from Queen's University.

He was appointed as an Officer Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1952. In 1952 he served in HMCS Cataraqui for UNTD. He was appointed as a Surgeon Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/09/1955).
