He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1918 when "in an engagement between three of our machines and seven of the enemy this officer displayed remarkable courage and determination. He was wounded early in the fight and suffering great pain, he continued the action and drove down one hostile aircraft causing it to make a very bad landing." (He was injured in an air accident on 04/07/1918 and discharged in 02/1919.)
