He was living in Toronto ON at the time of his recruitment into the navy. He was trained at the Stinson Flying School in San Antonio TX where he also contracted malaria. He held US Flying Certificate No. 497. He sailed on the Metagama from Montreal PQ on 27/05/1916. |

He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS (With seniority dated 16/05/1916). In 1916 he served in RNAS Windermere for flying training. (He experienced a number of medical difficulties and was discharged on 07/1918.) |
