Biography
He was the second son of Sir David Baird Bt. and the grandson of the 1st Marquess of Ailsa.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 01/12/1845). He was appointed as Mate RN in 10/02/1858 serving in H.M.S. Phaeton. He served in H.M.S. Sybille. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 28/02/1854). He served in H.M.S. Waterloo as Flag Lieutenant to Vice-Admiral the Hon. W. Gordon (He was the Commander-in-Chief at Sheerness). He served in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington in 1855. He was present for the Russian Campaign in the Baltic in 1855. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 03/07/1857). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 16/02/1864). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1879). He was appointed as AdC to HM Queen Victoria in 1878. He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S. Swiftsure) 1884-85. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 18/01/1886). He was appointed as Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserves in 1885-88. He was the Senior Officer-in-Command of the Channel Squadron 1888-90. (He was retired on 16/09/1897.)
