He was appointed as a First Class Volunteer RN (With seniority dated 20/11/1789). He served in H.M.S. Europe (on books only) in 1789. He was appointed as a Midshipman RN (With seniority dated 01/02/1790). He served in H.M.S. Alcide (Spithead Station) 1790. He served in H.M.S. Discovery in 1791 for Captain Vancouver's Around the World Voyage. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 05/11/1795). He served in H.M.S. Queen (Channel Station) 1795. He served in H.M.S. Sovereign (Channel Station) 1796. He served in H.M.S. Bourdelois as First Lieutenant (West Indies Station) 1800. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 23/10/1801). He served in H.M.S. Calypso (In command) (Jamaica) 1801. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 29/04/1802). He served in H.M.S. Brilliant (In command) (Channel Fleet) 1804. He served in H.M.S. Pomone (In command) (Mediterranean) 1806. While in command of H.M.S. Pomone he captured a vessel in which Prince Lucien Bonaparte and his family and all his valuables were found. The claim on the goods was surrendered as "belonging to an individual." The Pomone was sunk near the Needles in 1811. He served in H.M.S. Grampus (In command) (North American Station) 1812. He served in H.M.S. Dragon (In command) (North American Station) 1813-15. He served as Resident Commissioner on the Great Lakes 1819. He was appointed as a Commodore First Class RN (With seniority dated 19/06/1826) (He carried his pendant in HM Schooner Cochrane 1827-34).
