Anecdotes
In 1972 - 1979 he served as MP in the riding of Calgary South. In 2010 he was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame. Bill Clearihue states that "Peter Colwell Bawden (Peter for his paternal grandfather, Colwell his mother's maiden name), was raised in Toronto. He went to Upper Canada College for a year (1944/1945) and then went to Dawson College, then in St Jean, QC which was a post-war satellite campus for McGill. He had at least 2 UNTD (attached to Donnacona) summers out west and at the end of the summer of 1949 he showed up in Edmonton, intrigued by the Leduc Oil thing, roomed at the YMCA and started looking for a job. He never did complete Dawson/McGill and may not have been Commissioned. He did get a job at an Edmonton Lumberyard and shortly was moved up to Peace River and while there started his own delivery service and was exposed to oil-drilling and the rigs. He formed Peter Bawden Drilling in 1952 and turned that into a large Int'l operation. He was the first to drill north of 60 and the first to drill north of the Circle, also the first to drill off of and on Sable Island. He was based in Calgary and was the PC Fed MP for Calgary South (1972 - 79), which after re-distribution was subsequently held by Harper in the guise of Reform/Alliance/Conservative."
