He was qualified as a lawyer. He attended courses on art at the Ontario College of Art. He served as a War Artist in World War Two. He was the Vice-President of Royal Canadian Academy. He worked on the teaching staff of the Nova Scotia College of Art. A devotee of art, he also enrolled in the Ontario College of Art in 1922 and represented Canada at the British Empire Exposition in Wembley in 1924-1925. On returning to Canada, he moved to Montreal and earned his living as a commercial artist. He was elected a full member to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1948, he served as its President from 1964 to 1967. |

He was appointed as a Wireless Learner RNCVR (With seniority dated 01/09/1917). In 1917 he served in HMCS Niobe as Addional for Duty and Instruction at Naval Wireless Telegraph School. (He was demobilized.) He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCNVR (With seniority dated 02/08/1928). In 1928-1931 he served in the Montreal Company RCNVR. He served in the Montreal Division of the RCNVR as Commanding Officer 1930-1934. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RCNVR (With seniority dated 02/08/1936). (Retired). (He was mobilized for World War Two service 02/09/1939). He served in HMCS Ambler (In command) 1940. He served in HMCS Star XVI (In command) 1941-1942. He served in HMCS Vegreville (In command) 1942. He commanded a Minesweeping Flotilla. He was appointed as an A/Commander (Temp.) RCNVR 1943. He served in HMCS Shawnigan 1943. He was appointed as a Commander (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 01/07/1945). (He was qualified with a Watchkeeping Certificate.) (In 1943, he was appointed an official war artist, a duty he performed until 1947.) He was appointed as a Commander RCN(R) (Retired) (With seniority dated 01/07/1945). |
