Biography
He was qualified as a medical doctor in his civilian life. received his MD from the University of Ottawa in 1983 and was the gold medallist. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Internal Medicine in 1988, and in Cardiology in 1989, while carrying out his training at the University of Toronto. He is also certified by the following American boards: Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, and the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology. He gained expertise as a Research Fellow in Nuclear Cardiology at the University of Toronto in 1990 and in PET imaging at the University of Michigan between 1990 and 1992. He was the founding Chief of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, he retired on April 30, 2008 at the age of 75.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN(R) 1951. In 1951 he served in HMCS Scotian forUNTD (Mt. Allison University). He was appointed as an A/Surgeon Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/06/1956). He was appointed as a Surgeon Lieutenant RCN(R). In 1960 he served in HMCS Scotian. (He was released.)

Named Features The Donald S. Beanlands Ambulatory Care Centre at the Institute is named for him at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. The day after he retired, May 1, 2008 the then-Mayor of Ottawa, Larry O'Brien proclaimed it to be "Dr. Donald S. Beanlands Day in Ottawa".
