Biography
In 1876 he served in HMS Conway (Merchant Training School Ship). He served as an Apprentice in 1878 in the full rigged ship Star of France (a jute clipper). He served as Third Mate in the Micronesia and was eventually the Master. The Micronesia was destroyed by fire while under tow in the English Channel. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) In 1910 he served in the Canadian Hydrographic Service during the First World War as Chief Officer in the CGS Lillooet (hydrographic surveys in the Queen Charlotte Islands 1912-1915). He served in H.M.C.S. Naden (schooner). He commanded the Casco in 1921. From 1922-1923 he was in charge of the Hudsons Bay Company experiment in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. During this time he narrowly escaped imprisonment by both White and Red revolutionary forces there. He commanded the Janet Carruthers, the E.D. Kingsley, the Salvor, and lastly the West Vancouver Ferry. (He was retired in 1930 to Lasqueti Island BC.) (He died at his daughter's home in Portland OR USA).
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Cadet RNR. In 1876-1878 he attended HMS Conway (Merchant Navy training establishment). (He was mobilized for First World War service). He was appointed as a Chief Skipper RNCVR in 1914. He served in HMCS Rainbow for Gunnery and Signals Training 1914. (He was released in 1914 to join the Canadian Hydrographic Service.)
