Biography
He was appointed as Governor of Western Australia in 1903.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 07/1852) serving in H.M.S. Sampson. He was appointed as a Midshipman RN in 1853 serving in H.M.S. Sampson 1853 and H.M.S. Vulture in 1855. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 09/09/1858). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 26/11/1859). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 29/12/1871). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 15/05/1876). He was promoted Captain on successful completion of visit to India by HRH the Prince of Wales. He served in H.M.S. Shah (In command) in 1877 (He was Captain of H.M.S. Shah during the engagement with the Peruvian ironclad Huascar in 1877.) He served in H.M.S. Monarch (In command) in 1884. He was appointed as a AdC to HM Queen Victoria 1888-91. He was appointed as a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty 1889-92. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 20/05/1891). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief Cape of Good Hope and West Coast Africa Station 1892-95. (He was involved in an action against the Nana Chief of Benin. Over 600 slaves were said to have been freed during the operation.) He was appointed as the Second Sea Lord of the Admiralty 1895. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 10/05/1897). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station (Flag in H.M.S. Crescent) in 1899. He was appointed as a Admiral RN (With seniority dated 03/10/1902). (He retired on 30/05/1903.)
