Biography
He was the son of Henry Ogle Bell-Irving.
 
Military Service
He joined the Royal Flying Corps for First World War service. He was the first Canadian flying ace in the First World War shooting down six planes and a balloon. He was trained as an observer/gunner. He was shot down during September 1915. In December, he was wounded in action. He was re-trained as a pilot assigned to #60 Squadron. He was shot down again on 21 October 1916. He was wounded in action on 9 November 1916. He served at, then commanded the School of Special Flying at RAF Gosport. (He was demobilized. He was mobilized for Second World War service. During the Second World War he commanded RCAF Trenton.
