He was apprenticed as a Boy. He arrived in British Columbia and served as the Mate in the schooner Kate (Victoria to Fort Simpson). (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He was Second Mate on the brig Hazard for a voyage in 1879 to Australia. He joined the HBC as mate on the steamers Otter and Princess Louise to 1885 when he joined the Alexander as Mate. He served in vessels of the Department of Marine & Fisheries. He took command of the Isabel in 1887 and later in the Alexander and Emily. In 1888 he married Emily D. Swanson. He was appointed as a Pilot in the Nanaimo District in November 1890. (He was retired in 1903.) |
