He was educated at the South Devon Collegiate School and Stubbington House School.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 05/1858). He was appointed as Sub-Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 17/09/1863). He served in H.M.S. Barrossa. He was commissioned as Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 25/01/1866). He served in H.M.S. Research 1866. He served in H.M.S. Amethyst as Senior and Gunnery Lieutenant 1877. He served in H.M.S. Thalia (Egyptian War service) 1882. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1878). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1884). He served in H.M.S. Assistance (In command). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral (With seniority dated 22/06/1899). He served as Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S.
