He was appointed as a Cadet (RMC) serving in the Royal Military College of Canada 1950-1952. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 21/03/1951) He served in HMCS Cataraqui for UNTD 1950-1951. (Transferred to RCN). He was appointed as a Midshipman (E) RCN (With seniority dated 09/1952). He served with the Royal Navy for Training. He was appointed as A/Sub-Lieutenant (E) RCN. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (E) (RCN) (With seniority dated 01/1954). He served in HMCS Ontario 1955. He was appointed as Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 15/08/1956). He served with the Royal Navy for Training. He served in HMCS Bonaventure 1957. He served in the Royal Naval Engineering College (Manadon) 1960. He served in HMCS Bytown (DSDC) 1961.
