Biography
After his naval service he received a PhD in Physics and worked at AT&T Bell Labs. Boyle was Executive Director of Research for Bell Labs from 1975 until his retirement in 1979. On October 6, 2009, it was announced that he would share the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for "the invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit—the CCD sensor".

He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (P) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 19/08/1943). He was appointed as an A/Lieutenant RCNVR (With seniority dated 19/08/1944). He was appointed as a Lieutenant (P) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 19/08/1944). (Later backdated to 1943). He served in #13 Elementary Flying Training School. He served in #14 Service Flying Training School. He served in RAF Errol for #9 AFU. He served in RNAS Hinstock. He served in RNAS Henstridge for 761 Squadron. He served in RNAS St. Merryn 794 RN Squadron. He served in RNAS Ayr for 768 RN Squadron. He served in RAF Ballyhalbert for 718 RN Squadron. (He was demobilized.)
