Biography
He was a founder of the Naval Records Society. After his naval service he was an Assessor on the North Sea Enquiry Commission investigation into the 1904 Dogger Bank Incident involving the Russian Naval fleet on its way to action in Asia. In 1906-1912 he was the Admiralty representative on the Royal Patriotic Fund Corporation. In 1916 he served on the Mesopotamia Commission of Inquiry.
 
Military Service
He joined the RN in 1853 serving in HMS Medea. He served in HMS Cumberland for Training on the North American Station. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (Crimean War service in the White Sea). He was appointed as a Midshipman RN. He served in HMS Pelorus in the East Indies. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN 1859. He served in HMS Algiers. He served in HMS Hawke on the Irish Station. He served in HMS Fawn in the West Indies. He served in HMS Excellent for Gunnery Training. He was appointed as Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Sir Alfred Ryder RN in the Channel Fleet. He was appointed as a Commander RN 1869. He served in HMS Caledonia. He served in HMS Cambridge. He served in HMS Implacable. He served in HMS Audacious on the China Station. He was appointed as a Captain RN 1877. In 1878-79 he served on the Admiralty and War Office Committees on Heavy Guns, Armour Plate and Projectiles. He served in HMS Espiegle (In command) and as Deputy Commissioner for the Western Pacific. He served in HMS Colossus (In command). He served in the Admiralty as Director of the Naval Intelligence Department 1889-94. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 11/1894). He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Squadron (Flag in HMS Orlando) 1894. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN 1898. In 1901 he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the China Station. He was appointed as an Admiral RN 1903. (He was retired 03/1904).
