His first voyages were deep-sea New York to Le Havre, Rotterdam. On one voyage he found an abandoned ship under sail and took her to Fayal Azores and was awarded salvage. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He began sailing out of the Atlantic coast to the West indies from New York and made some voyages to South America. While in command of the bark Ingleside (he was part owner) he visited the Pacific Northwest in 1883. He then moved his family to Victoria BC. He took command of the steamship Sardonyx and ran to Hong Kong and Mexico. He was Master of the Beaver for a few months before returning to the east to purchase the schooner Ariel which he brought out. In 1887 he sailed the Ariel out from Saint John NB to Victoria. He took one voyage to the Bering Sea but was ordered out of the area by the US Revenue Cutter Richard Rush. He then took command of the dredge Pacific and later the Monobel. (He was qualified as a Marine Pilot) From 1891-1908(?) he was a Marine Pilot in the Victoria & Esquimalt Pilotage Authority. In 1910 he resigned to become Master of the yacht Anemone IV (owned by C.D. Taylor). |

He purchased the sealing vessel Ariel and sailed her out from the East Coast for hunting in the Bering sea. He was ordered out of Alaskan waters by the USRC Richard Rush. |
