He went to sea working for W.D. Lovitt, sailing out of Weymouth to Europe and the USA. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He arrived in the Pacific as mate of the ship Antwerp. He was appointed as master of the tug Pilot. He was then Master of the Isobel and then the tug Alexander. He commanded the Joan for the Dunsmuirs. (He was licenced as a Pilot in the Victoria District in December 1894.) In 1907 he was later appointed as a pilot in the Nanaimo Pilotage District. He was part owner of the pilot boats D.W. Gordon and Dawadena. (He was retired c1916). |
