He was appointed as an Officer Cadet 1932. He served in the Royal Military College of Canada 1932. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN 1934. He served in H.M.S. Frobisher for Training (Special Entry No. 36) 1934. He was appointed as a Midshipman RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1935). He served in H.M.S. Dragon for Training 1935. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN 1936. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1937). He served in H.M.S. Royal Oak (for Non-Intervention Patrol Spanish Civil War) 1937. He served in HMCS Venture 1938. In 1938 he served in HMS Excellent for Training. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/02/1939). He served in HMCS Saguenay 1939. He served in HMCS St. Laurent as First Lieutenant 1940.
