He was the son of Albrecht Fredrik Calkoen, who was then a practising lawyer. During the War years, from 1942 on, the father was a Major and later Judge Advocate for the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. Post-War the father was in the Dutch Diplomatic Service in London (1946-1949), Belgrade (1951-1954), Ottawa (1954-1958) and Moscow (1958-1960). He was then Ambassador to Bangkok (1961-1965), Warsaw (1965-1970), New Delhi (1970-1973) and he ended his career as Ambassador in Athens (1973-1978). While the family were in Ottawa, Charles attended Ashbury College and entered Queen's and the UNTD in the fall of 1956. Charles was in a single vehicle car crash a number of miles out of town. |

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 02/01/1957). He served in HMCS Cataraqui for UNTD 1956-1959. (He was Released Dead effective June 30, 1959.) |
