He was the father of Captain James Christensen Jr. In 1864 he arrived in Victoria as the Boatswain in the King Oscar. In 1864 he joined the sealing fleet with Captain Spring. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He served as Mate and Master in the Alert and Surprise. He served as Master of the tugs Vancouver, Enterprise (1855), Lorne. He was Master of the Pilot for the British Columbia Towing & Transportation Co. He served as Master in the Beaver, and Alexander. In 1876 he was appointed as a Marine Pilot in the Victoria and Nanaimo Districts. He was the Pilot of the San Pedro when she sank on Brotchie ledge on 22/11/1891 and was suspended for three months. (He was retired in 1919). |
