He was appointed as a Pilot in the Royal Air Force #206 (RAF) Squadron. (Transferred to the RNAS). He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1917. taken on strength of RNAS in Ottawa, 19 April 1917 as Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant. With #206 Squadron, 23 July to 30 August 1918. He successfully completed pilot training but chose to serve as an observer aboard D.H.9s due to a fear of heights. During World War II, Christian served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. "Since joining his squadron this officer has taken part in 47 bomb raids, displaying at all times keenness and determination, and rendering his pilot most valuable support. He has accounted for four enemy aeroplanes, destroying two and driving down two out of control." DFC citation, London Gazette, 21 September 1918.
