Biography
He was the son of Thomas Cochrane 8th Earl of Dundonald. He was a Member of Parliament.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 22/04/1758). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 06/12/1780). He was appointed as a Captain RN on (With seniority dated 17/12/1782). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 09/11/1805). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 28/04/1808). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 25/10/1809). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 31/07/1810). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 04/12/1813). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels in the River St. Lawrence along the coast of Nova Scotia, the Islands of Anticosti, Madelaine, St. John and Cape Breton, the Bay of Fundy and at and about Bermuda or Somers' Islands, the Bahama Islands, and the Gulf of Mexico to the Tropic of Cancer (he carried his flag in H.M.S. Asia and H.M.S. Tonnant) 1813. He was appointed as an Admiral of the Blue RN.
