Biography
He was the son of Thomas Cochrane 10th Earl of Dundonald. He received a vote of thanks from the House of Assembly in Newfoundland for the protection of the Labrador fishery. His promotion to flag-rank was delayed as a result of being under suspension at the time his turn came around. He was distinguished at the Battle of Acre. He commanded the Niger and was wounded at the destruction of the Chinese fleet in June 1857.

Wellesley as Flag Lieutenant to Commander-in-Chief North American and West Indies Station 1848. He served in H.M.S. Sappho (In Temporary Command) 1850. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 12/04/1851). He served in H.M.S. Sappho (In command). He served in H.M.S. Driver (In command) 1854. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 29/08/1854). He served in H.M.S. Horatio (In command) 1855. He served in H.M.S. Niger (In command) 1856. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 01/04/1870). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (he carried his flag in H.M.S. Repulse) in 1873. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 12/11/1876). He was appointed as an Admiral RN (With seniority dated 01/12/1881).(He was retired on 22/06/1886.)
