He was the son of Thomas Cochrane 10th Earl of Dundonald. He received a vote of thanks from the House of Assembly in Newfoundland for the protection of the Labrador fishery. His promotion to flag-rank was delayed as a result of being under suspension at the time his turn came around. He was distinguished at the Battle of Acre. He commanded the Niger and was wounded at the destruction of the Chinese fleet in June 1857. |
