Biography
In 1814 he was involved in a significant financial swindle which resulted in his being sentenced to imprisonment, being struck off the Navy List, and expelled from the House of Commons and the Order of the Bath. Afterwards in 1818 he served under the Governments of Chile, Peru and Brazil as an Admiral in their Wars of Independence against Spain. He was created Marquess of Maranham in the Empire of Brazil. He commanded the Greek Navy in their War of Independence. He was elected as MP for Honiton in 1806, and as MP for Westminster in 1807. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, London UK.
 
Military Service
He joined the Royal Navy serving in H.M.S. Hind in 1793. He was appointed an A/Lieutenant RN in 1795 in H.M.S. Thetis serving on the North American Station. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1796. He served in H.M.S. Foudroyant on the Mediterranean Station in 1798. He served in H.M.S. Barfleur (Mediterranean Station) 1798. He served in H.M.S. Queen Charlotte. He was court-martialled c1799 for disrespect to the First Lieutenant of H.M.S. Barfleur and was admonished to "avoid flippancy." He served in Genereux (as Prize Master) in 1800. He served in H.M.S. Speedy (Brig) (In command) 1800. While commanding H.M.S. Speedy he captured more than 50 ship prizes. He was appointed as a Captain RN in 1801. He captured the French Frigate El Gamo in 1801. He was captured by the French Navy in 1801 and paroled to Gibraltar. He served in H.M.S. Arab (Collier) (In command) 1803. He served in H.M.S. Pallas (In command) 1805. He served in H.M.S. Imperieuse (In command). He destroyed Napoleon's ships at Basque Roads in 1809. He was appointed as Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Navy 1817-22. He was appointed as the first Admiral of Brazil 1823-25. He was appointed as an Admiral in the Greek Navy 1826-28. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN and re-instated in the Royal Navy in 1832. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 23/11/1841). He was appointed was the Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels on the North American and West Indies Stations 1848-51. He was appointed as a Admiral RN (With seniority dated 21/03/1851). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth in 1852. He was appointed as the Rear-Admiral of the United Kingdom on 23/10/1854.
