He was appointed as a Midshipman RN 1735. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 31/08/1739). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 06/03/1744). He was appointed as a Commodore RN (With seniority dated 27/10/1759). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels in North America (Pendant in H.M.S. Northumberland) in 1759. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 21/10/1762). He served as Commander-in-Chief Ships and Vessels North America (Flag in H.M.S. Northumberland) 1763, Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White RN (Flag in H.M.S. Northumberland). He served under Admiral Boscawen off Louisbourg while in command H.M.S. Northumberland in 1755. He commanded the Northumberland at the siege of Quebec in 1759. He relieved the garrison of Governor Murray in 1760. He commanded an expedition to recapture St. John's in 1762. He established a "fixed headquarters" at Halifax while he was Commander-in-Chief in 1763. |
