Biography
He was the Uncle of Admiral William Wolseley. Successor to Stradbally from: Sir. Dudley Alexander Sydney Cosby, Esq.; who left no issue at his decease, when the family estates passed to his kinsman, Thomas Cosby, Esq., of Vicarstown. Burial date: 16/01/1808 at Abbey Church, Bath, England.
 
Military Service
He joined the navy in 1745 in HMS Comet (bomb ship). On 12/02/1745 he was captured by the Spanish, but was soon exchanged. On 28/01/1755 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant RN in HMS Fame (74 guns). In 1758 he commanded a schooner at the siege of Louisbourg. In 1759 he served as Aide-de-Camp to General Wolfe at the siege of Quebec. On 02/06/1760 he commanded HMS Laurel (sloop). On 19/05/1761 he was promoted to Captain RN in HMS Hind (20 guns). In 1767 he was appointed as Captain RN in HMS Montreal (32 guns frigate). In 1778 he served as Captain RN serving in HMS Centaur (74 guns). In 27/07/1778 he was in action at Brest with Lord Keppel. In 1779 he was promoted to Captain RN serving in HMS Robust (74 guns). On 16/03/1781 he was in action against the French. In 1786 he was promoted to Commodore RN on the Mediterranean Station serving in HMS Trusty (50guns). On 21/09/1790 he was promoted Rear Admiral of the White serving in HMS Fame (74 guns). In 1792 he was appointed as commander at Plymouth as Port Admiral carrying his flag in HMS St. George (98guns). On 1/02/1993 he was promoted to Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN serving in HMS Windsor Castle (98 guns). On 11/04/1794 he was promoted to Vice-Admiral of the Red RN serving in HMS Alcide (74 guns). On 14/02/1799 he was promoted to Admiral of the Blue RN. On 01/01/1801 he was promoted to Admiral of the White RN. On 09/11/1805 he was promoted to Admiral of the Red.
