He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 15/07/1886). He was appointed as a Midshipman RN (With seniority dated 15/08/1888). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (T) RN (With seniority dated 14/08/1893). He served in H.M.S. Highflyer (II) (twin screw cruiser) in 1900. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 01/01/1904). He served as Commander-in-Chief for Station Duties on the West Coast of America (Pendant carried in H.M.S. Shearwater) in 1907. He was appointed as a Captain RN. He was made a CBE "For valuable services as Divisional Naval Transport Officer at Newcastle-on-Tyne, Southampton, Zeebrugge, Ostend, Nantes, Liverpool, Thames, Deptford and Copenhagen."
