He was a carpenter at the time of his recruitment into the navy.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. He was appointed as a Shipwright RNCVR. He was appointed as a Leading Shipwright RNCVR. He served in HMCS Shearwater In 1915-1916 he served in HMCS Rainbow. (He was demobilized).

Anecdotes
Steve Dallaway (grandson) stated "he was a carpenter by trade building a few houses and was also served on the Esquimalt Village Council. Interesting, I was looking at his hat in this photo and it says HMS Shearwater another ship I didn’t know he was on. On another subject I have quite a few photos of his time on the Rainbow 1915-1916 in and around Mexico."
