Biography
He moved to New Westminster BC in 1892 and to Vancouver in 1895. (In 1911 he was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He was the Chairman of the Board British Columbia Coast Pilots 1944 & 1946. In 1902 he went to sea in the Phoenix (a Skeena and Fraser River cannery tug). In 1911 he commanded the tug Armoco.He served in the Claxton in the halibut fishery. He sailed deep sea in the Trongate, the four-masted barks Tweedsdale, Comliebank and Garradale. He sailed in the American Bark Pactolus and the barkentineIrmgard. He returned to BC waters in the tugs Clayburn, Constance, Jessie Mac, Commodore and Active. He served in the coastal passenger steamer Tartar and thefreighter Selkirk. He made trans-Pacific voyages in the Empress of Asia, Monteagle, and Harold Dollar. He served coastwise in the Canadian Trooper, and Canadian Observer. In 1957 he served as Master of the destroyer Skeena for her builders trials, and in 1959 served the same role for the Kootenay. (He was qualified as a a British Columbia Coast Pilot. ) After his retirement he moved to Sechelt BC where he served 8 years as an Alderman on the village council.
