He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 01/04/1867). In 1867 he served in HMS Aurora for Training. He was appointed as a Midshipman RN (With seniority dated 18/06/1869). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 18/12/1873). (In his qualifying courses he obtained three firsts). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 16/04/1878). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1891). He served in the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert as Commander 1893-1896. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 13/05/1896). He served in HMCS Niobe (In command) 1901. He served as Superintendent Pembroke Dockyard 1904-06. He was appointed as an AdC to HM the King 1905-1906. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 18/09/1906). He served as Commanding Officer Devonport Division of Home Fleet 1908-1909. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 07/12/1913).
