Biography
After his naval service he was appointed Director Directorate of History NDHQ 1973-1992. He was appointed as Director General of History for Department of National Defence at Ottawa 1992-1994. He was the President of the Ontario Historical Society 1981-1982. He was the Adjunct Research Professor of History at Carleton University 1985-1994. He was appointed as the Visiting Professor of Duke University 1988-1989. He was the President Canadian Nautical Research Society 1990-1993.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCN(R) 1947. He served in HMCS York for UNTD 1947-1950. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1948. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 21/09/1950). He served in HMCS Ontario for Sea Training. He served in HMCS Swansea for Training. (Transferred to RCN). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1952). He served in HMCS Quebec for Sea Training. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/05/1953). He served in HMCS Quebec as Watchkeeper 1955. He served in HMCS Penetang as Watchkeeper. He served in HMCS Outremont as Watchkeeper. He served in HMCS Niobe for RN Long Navigation Course 1957. He served in HMCS Stadacona for Staff of Flag Officer Atlantic Coast as Equipment and Trials Officer (Navigation and Direction) 1960. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RCN (With seniority dated 01/05/1961). (He was qualified for destroyer command in 1961.) In 1961 he served in Staff of Commander Seventh Canadian Escort Squadron as Squadron Navigator and Operations Officer. He served in the Royal Military College of Canada as Naval Staff Officer and Associate Professor of Military Studies 1964. He served in NDHQ on Directorate of History as Historian 1967. He was appointed as a Commander RCN 1970. He served in NDHQ on Staff of Directorate of History as Senior Historian 1970. (He was retired 1973.)

Anecdotes
In 2003 he received the Admiral's Medal "for his notable and unique contribution to the naval and military history of Canada. He has demonstrated a life long passion for his work and has been a major contributor to the education and professional development of Canadian officers. He was one of the individuals responsible for the establishment of the Canadian Nautical Reserve Society and the revitalization of the Society’s, Northern Mariner. He opened opportunities for advanced studies in both official languages and served as a graduate studies supervisor for military students at several universities. He initiated the project that led to development and eventual publication of the Official Operational History of the RCN on 1 May 2003."
