Biography
He was a cousin of William Duff, Earl of Fife.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 23/10/1746). He served in HMS Anglesea. He served in HMS Rochester. He served in HM Foudroyant. He was appointed as a Commodore RN in 1775 and served as Commodore Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland 1775-57. (He was present at the Battle of Quiberon Bay.) He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue (With seniority dated 31/03/1775). In April 1775, appointed Commander-in-Chief and Governor of Newfoundland. He served one year. In 1775 he commanded HMS Panther in the Mediterranean and took part in the siege of Gibraltar in 1779. He was appointed as a Rear Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 05/02/1776). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 29/01/1778). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 26/09/1780). He settled in England in 1780.
