Military Service
He served on the Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New England Stations as an Ordinary Seaman RN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 30/06/1731). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 06/02/1742). While in command of H.M.S. Eltham he participated in Commodore Warren's capture of Louisbourg in 1745. He was appointed as a Commodore RN 1758. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 08/07/1758). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 14/02/1759). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief North America (Flag in H.M.S. Princess Amelia) in 1758-59. (He was third-in-command as a Commodore for Admiral Boscawen's attack on Louisbourg in 1758. He selected the site for the establishment of the dockyard at Halifax in 1758.) (He participated with his squadron on the attack on Quebec 1759, acting as second-in-command to Admiral Saunders.) He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 21/10/1762). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief North America (Flag in H.M.S. Launceston) 1766.
