His home was in New Aberdeen, Nova Scotia where his father was a miner and he also worked in the coal pits and later on with the electric engines and power house at the mine site. |

He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RCN in 1914. (Transferred to RNAS 03/02/1916). He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS. He served in HMS Victory 27/02/1916. He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS. He served in RNAS White City 17/04/1916. He served in RNAS Redcar 25/04/1916. He served in RNAS Eastchurch 13/08/1916. He served in #3 (Naval) Wing 29/08/1916. He was shot down and interned as a prisoner of war 14/04/1917 (Freiberg Raid). He was repatriated 14/01/1919. He served in the Russian Campaign 1918-1919.
