Biography
He went to sea as Apprentice in the bark Queen Margaret (Renton & Holmes). He served in the ship Launceston as Third Mate. He served in the ship Julia as Second Mate. He arrived in Victoria in 1863 and left the ship to prospect for gold in the Cariboo. He served in the Alarm as Master sailing between Victoria and Nanaimo in the trading and freighting business. He served in the schooner Isabel between Victoria, Alberni, and Honolulu. In 1866 he served in the scow Industry as a Master. He moved to Port Blakeley WA to work for Renton & Holmes. He served again in the Isabel. He was appointed as boat keeper for the British Columbia Pilots. He served in the Alpha as Mate. The Alpha was wrecked on the north coast of Vancouver Island and he walked across the island to Nanaimo. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner #918.) He served in the steamer Emma as Master. He served in the scow Discovery and the tug Union as Master. In 1877 he was appointed as a Marine Pilot . He served as Supervisor of Pilots and as Secretary of the British Columbia Pilotage Association. (He was retired in 1920)
