Biography
He was the grandson of Captain Robert Fanshawe RN who was the Resident Commissioner at Plymouth 1789-1815 and was also at one time MP for Plymouth.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 01/09/1828). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN on 1833. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 15/08/1835). He served in HMS Hastings. He served in HMS Magicienne as Acting Flag Lieutenant to Rear-Admiral Pleydell-Bouverie. He served in HMS Dido as First Lieutenant 1841. He served in H.M.S. Daphne. He was Lieutenant of H.M.S. Daphne at the bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre in 1840. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 28/08/1841). He served in HMS Cruiser (16 guns) (In command). He commanded boats at the destruction of pirate base at Malloodoo Borneo in 1845. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 07/09/1845). He served in H.M.S. Cossack (In command) (Baltic War 1855). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 03/11/1863). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 01/04/1870). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station (Flag in H.M.S. Royal Alfred) 1870. He was appointed as a Admiral RN (With seniority dated 18/06/1876). He served as Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth 1878-79. He received the thanks of Her Majesty the Queen for bringing into harbour H.M.S. Eurydice in 1878. He was a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty. (He was retired on 26/11/1879.)
