He might have been lower deck RCNVR briefly, then got in on a post-war education grant to McGill, and then was at Mt A, all in short order. After his naval service he was a Barrister and served as an officer of Atlantic Aviation Ltd. He was elected as a Progressive Conservative Member of the Nova Scotia Legislature for Halifax Northwest in 1960. He ran FitzGerald & Company, until 1979. He was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1963, serving as an MLA from Bedford until 1970, Speaker of the House from 1969 to 1970, and Chairman of the Select Committee on Medicare.
 
Military Service
(He may have had Second World War service.) He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1948. In 1948 he served in HMCS Scotian for UNTD. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 06/02/1951). He was appointed as an A/Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 06/02/1953). (He was released.)
