Biography
He was created Baron Gambier of Iver in 1807. He was the son of John Gambier, the Lieutenant-Governor of the Bahamas. In 1815 he was created a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath.

 

Military Service

He entered the Royal Navy in 1767 as a Midshipman RN serving in H.M.S. Yarmouth 1767 (commanded by his uncle). He served in HMS Salisbury (North America Station) 1769. He served in HMS Chatham (Leeward Islands) 1772. He served in HMS Royal Oak. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 12/02/1777). He served in HMS Shark. He served in HMS Hind. He served in HMS Sultan 1777. He was appointed as a Commander RN 09/03/1778). He served in HMS Thunder (In command) 1778. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 09/10/1778). He served in H.M.S. Raleigh (In command) 1779. He served in HMS Endymion (In command) 1780. He served in H.M.S. Defence (In command) 1793. He was present at the Battle of the Glorious First of June 1794. He was appointed as Colonel of Royal Marine 1794. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN in 1798. He was appointed as a Lord of the Admiralty. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN in 1799. He was appointed as Commodore-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Newfoundland 03/09/1802 - 20/07/1804. He served in the Admiralty 1804. He was appointed as a Admiral 1805. He was appointed as a Lord of the Admiralty 1805. He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Baltic Fleet in 1807 for second Battle of Copenhagen. In 1809-11 he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Channel Fleet. He participated in negotiating the Treaty of Ghent to end the War of 1812. He was appointed as a Admiral of the Fleet RN (With seniority dated 22/07/1830).
