Biography
He came from Victoria BC. After his naval service he began his business career at W. J. Gage & Company, a leading educational publisher in Canada. He moved up the ladder rapidly becoming a Vice-President and Director. In his spare time, he and some friends formed Coffee-Mat Services, an automatic coffee vending enterprise. He was the Chairman National Westminster Bank of Canada Ltd. and President Scotia Synfuels Ltd. and President Alastair Gillespie & Associates. He was elected to House of Commons as Liberal Member for Etobicoke in General Election of 1968, 1972, 1974. He was the Parliamentary Secretary to President of Treasury Board 1970. He was the Minister of State for Science and Technology 1971-19722. He served as the Minister of Industry Trade and Commerce 1972-1975. He was appointed as the Minister of Energy Mines and Resources 1975-1979.

He served in Royal Roads (RCNC) as Term Lieutenant 1942. He served in HMCS Saskatchewan 1943. (He was awarded Wings 17/11/1944). He served in RCAF Belleville for ITS 1944. He served in RCAF St. Eugene for Elementary Flying Training School 1944. He served in RCAF Kingston for Service Flying Training School 1944. He served in RAF Erroll 1945. He served in RNAS Hinstock for Instrument Flying Course 1945. He served in RNAS Yeovilton for 759 Squadron 1945. He served in RNAS St. Merryn for Air Gunnery Training 1945. He served in RNAS Dale for Carrier Landing Training 1945. He served in H.M.S. Premier for Carrier Landing Qualification 1945. He served in RNAS Eglinton for 768 Squadron 1945. (He was demobilized 1945.) (He was qualified as a pilot for naval aviation and with a Watchkeeping Certificate.)
