He entered the Royal Navy in 1755. He served in H.M.S. Dolphin as Master's Mate. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1766. He served under Byron's command on the Dolphin from 1764 to 1766 on a world voyage. He served in H.M.S. Swallow in 1766. He served in H.M.S. Swift in 1770 and in H.M.S. Sandwich as First Lieutenant in 1779. He was appointed as a Captain RN. He was Flag-Captain to Governor John Elliot from 1786 to 1789. In 1792 he was knighted. He served in H.M.S. Lion (In command) 1792-94. He was appointed as a Commodore RN carrying his Pendant in H.M.S. Neptune. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 14/02/1799). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 23/04/1804). In 1804 he was appointed as Commodore-Governor of Newfoundland. He left Newfoundland in October 1806. He was appointed as a Admiral RN (With seniority dated 23/04/1809). He was appointed as a Admiral of the White (With seniority dated 31/07/1810) but saw no further service. |
