He was qualified as a Lawyer and practiced in Winnipeg MB.

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (S) (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 02/01/1951). He served in HMCS Chippawa for UNTD 1950-1951. (He was released.)

Anecdotes
It is reported that as a lawyer he ran seriously afoul of the law himself in 1977, on charges of theft and breach of trust, with a custodial sentence. Various appeals went up to the Supreme Court in 1982, where most of his convictions were upheld.
