Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy 1834. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN. As a Lieutenant he assisted in the destruction of Chinese pirates in 1849. He was appointed as a Commander RN. He was appointed as a Captain RN on (With seniority dated 19/01/1855). He served in H.M.S. Immortalite (In command), Flag Captain to Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue (With seniority dated 24/01/1850). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White (With seniority dated 19/01/1855). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red (With seniority dated 20/10/1872). He was second in command of the Channel Squadron (Flag in H.M.S. Northumberland) 1873-5. He was Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station in 1876. He was invalided home from the Pacific Station.
