Biography
He is the son of the pioneer Canadian cross country skiier and owner of a pioneer ski shop in Ottawa, Halvor Heggtveitt. He is the brother of the artist Bruce Heggtveitt and the Olympic Gold Medalist skiier Ann Heggtveitt. He studied for M.D at University of Ottawa, 1957. Postgraduate training Ottawa and New York City. He served as Staff Pathologist Ottawa General Hospital (1962-1975), Ottawa Civic Hospital (1975-1982) and Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals (1982). He was a Professor of Pathology, University of Ottawa and McMaster University. His sub-specialty interest is human and experimental cardiovascular diseases. He was appointed as a Professor Emeritus at McMaster University.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1951. He served in HMCS Carleton for UNTD 1951. He was appointed as a Surgeon Lieutenant RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/06/1955). (He was released.)
