Biography
He was the brother of Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport.
 
Military Service
He entered Royal Navy as Captain's Servant (With seniority dated 06/05/1741). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 17/06/1746). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 10/05/1754). He served in H.M.S. Lively 1756. He served in H.M.S. Grafton. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 22/07/1756). (During this time he captured privateers and drove a French ship of 50 guns ashore). He served in H.M.S. Africa (In command) 1758. In 1758 she was in command of H.M.S. Vestal (In command) when he captured the French ship Bellona. He served in H.M.S. Thunderer (In command) 1767. He was appointed as a Commodore RN. He served as Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels in the river St. Lawrence along the Coast of Nova Scotia, the islands of St. John and HMCS Cape Breton, and thence to New York 1767. He was appointed as a Commissioner at Portsmouth and Governor of the Naval College. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 26/09/1780) (He sailed in a squadron under Admiral Rodney in the West Indies), He was raised in the Irish Peerage as Baron Hood of Catherington Hampshire 1782. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Westminster 1784. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 24/09/1787). He was made a member of the Board of Admiralty 1788. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 01/02/1793). He captured the Island of Corsica in 1793. He was appointed as a Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 12/04/1794). He was appointed as an Elder Brother of Trinity House 1795. He was appointed as Governor of Greenwich Hospital 1796. He was raised to the peerage of Great Britain as Viscount Hood in 1796. He was appointed as a Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 14/02/1799). He was appointed as a Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 09/11/1805).
