He entered the Royal Navy in 1820 at the Royal Naval College Portsmouth. He served in H.M.S. Forte in 1822. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 09/03/1827). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 26/02/1830). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 28/06/1838). He served in H.M.S. Firebrand (In command) 1844. He served in H.M.S. Majestic (In command) 1854-56. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 19/11/1857). He served as Commander-in-Chief East Indies and China Station 1859.
