He was created as a Peer of Great Britain in 1782 as Viscount and then again in 1788 as Earl Howe. He was responsible for the introduction of improved methds of signalling at sea adopting systems developed by Richard Kempenfelt and others. |

He entered the Royal Navy in 16/07/1739 and served in H.M.S. Pearl in 1739 and H.M.S. Severn in 1740. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1744. He was appointed as a Commander RN in 1745.
