He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS (With seniority dated 1915). He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNVR. He served in #1 Wing RNAS For Duty as an Observer 1916.

Anecdotes
He was qualified as a pilot, but self-selected to become and observer. He was lost the first day on squadron with his pilot when they crashed on landing.
