Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy as an Able-Seaman RN (With seniority dated 04/01/1749). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN 1755. He was appointed as a Commander RN 1758. He served in H.M.S. Porcupine (In command) 1795 when he led the squadron past Quebec. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 13/10/1760). He served in H.M.S. Alarm (In command) 1769. He served in H.M.S. Foudroyant (In command) 1782. He captured the Pegase in 1782. He was appointed as a Commodore RN 1783. He was elected as a member of Parliament. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 24/09/1787). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 01/02/1793). He was appointed as a Commander-in-Chief Mediteranean Station in 1795. He was appointed as a Admiral RN 01/07/1795. He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief Channel Fleet 1800. He was elevated to Earl St. Vincent 16/07/1797 for his defeat of the Spanish fleet at Cape St. Vincent. He was the First Lord of the Admiralty 1801.
